Bomb Disposal

Hello,

As Bomb Disposal is quite special skill I am inquistive to Bomb Disposal Units around the world, especially as my dad was RAF Bomb Disposal many years ago. What I mean is who operates them, what vehicles/technology do they have and how thinly spread are they? For example, here in Britain, Bomb Disposal is very thinly spread and is operated by the Military (RAF, Royal Navy and the Army all have units) and the Royal Logistics Corps. The only Police Force to have a Bomb Disposal unit is London as far as I'm aware and they have following set-up:

The Met have 4 full time bomb disposal officers all civilians with the honorary rank of Superintendent and all are ex army bomb disposal officers. They all have police officers as drivers and have a fleet of 3 specially equipped Range Rovers which they use as rapid response vehicles. They also have several other specialist vehicles including 2 adapted Mercedes Sprinter box vans which they use to transport their "wheelbarrow" remote control bomb disposal machines. They are based at a Central London Location (not the yard) and respond to all suspect packages / devices around the Met. The only time the army are used in the Met area is when any WW2 ordnance is found where it takes a long time to deal with and the police bomb disposal units would be tied up for too long reducing their ability to respond to other incidents. well on the federal level we have the FBI bomb squad, who not only respond to bombs, but any type of explosion. They were deployed during 9/11, to the flight 93 crash site to sift through reckage. One of the teams actually found a switch blade, inside a lighter. They also found a passport for one of the suspected terrists and analized the moments of impact. Regarding bombs they are trained as the best of the best, and use state of the art equitment, and traning to their advantage. They are stationed all around the United states in select citys.

Well I know here in parts of my area here in Indiana, which is pretty rural, Evansville has there own bomb squad and response vehicle. However I know there was a bomb threat not to long ago just a little north of here, and Indiana State Police responded. Both department use an E350 with a utility body on it.

I know LAPD has several bomb squad trucks. My favorite is:

The dutch have 2 ways of bomb disposal,

1. The KMAR(Koninklijke Marechaussee)(dutch version of militairy police with cival duty's as well)

2. The KM(Royal Netherlands Army)(in this case this covers the navy and airforce to)

Both use the "EOD" department for that.

EOD stands for : Explosieve opruiming dienst.

The KMAR uses the: Special modified Landrover 110 and a type of merceders van(see the back of picture) For that.

Painted in Blue with EOD signs on it(see below)

The KM uses a yellow Merceders type van(not sure what type).

Both work in the same way.

They drive, do a visual check of the object.

If "hostile" relocate(in the event of towns/villages, highways,...well anywhere where people could go.

After relocating, they use a robot(or still sometimes) humans, to get rid of the trigger of the "explosive devise".

When done they eiter:

1. Drill a hole in the devise and and add some explosives to it to blow it.

2. Disarm and dismantle it schip the parts out one by one, sepperated from the other.

As far as i know the UK work in this way:

(More info about this one: AB 36 AB This DAF truck is used by the Royal Air Force as a Bomb Disposal vehicle. In the same way as Royal Logistics' vehicles, the bomb disposal signs can be hidden to disguise the identity and use of the vehicle. It is fitted with blue flashing lights on the front, sides and front and rear of the roof.

Bomb disposal in the US:

Federal:

All federal agencies have their own experts. Some group have full fledged teams others may have individuals (they don't particularly like to go into what they do and don't have). Investigation is primarily done by the ATF.

Local:

Depends by area, some places have county wide units, where other larger cities have their own dedicated teams. they can vary in size from 1-20 or 30 people. Depending on place they may be run by either the police or fire department. Tools that are used are standard across the board, robots, containment devices, mobile x-rays.For Example here is the Columbus Fire Department Bomb Squad Truck:

Military:

The US military has EOD groups. Depending on their proximity and type of explosive they may be called. Normally it's only for unexploded ordinance (ie. WWII shells, and civil war cannon balls).

All bomb disposal techs here undergo the EOD training to certify. I think it's held somewhere in Virginia.

*The problem with talking about bomb disposal at least in the US, is that alot of is kept fairly secret particularly tools of the trade and investigation abilities. There's a good book called bomb squad about the NYPD Bomb Squad which I recommend.

So are Bomb Squads normally run by the Polcie or Fire Department in America, because in the LA Mod there is a police one (which was what I thought all in the US were) but MCERT has provided evidence for the contrary. Very intereting...

It depends from area to area. Where I'm at for college, the police run the bomb squad. In Columbus, where I live the fire department does. It just depends by place but mostly I'd say it falls to the police department.

Nice, all the American trucks look beefier and bigger and cooler than the DAF's and Ivecos we have over here. But the Americans have beefier and bigger (but not cooler) roads so it makes sense!

Bomb threat at my local airport ABIA, Flight 2486 from Austin to Chicago. A note was found saying a bomb is onboard the plane. It has been evacuated and sitting on the tarmac.

EDIT: Plane has been cleared.

We have that "device" here too, what it is (for us at least) is when declaired the package can be put into it and contained safely untill it can be taken somewhere else.

They will use ours to detonate. They said theres a wooden platform in the middle so they can put the bomb in and detonate, and it actually has some degree of bio-chemical equipment as well which FFs have received training on already.
