itchboy
As some of you know, I've been showing off a pair of Ford Police Interceptors. Ive recieved quite a few requests for these and I would like to know what the general consensus on this site is on usage of converted models before I release it. Is it okay or is it considered dishonorable or downwright stealing? Or does adding one's own additions to the model technically make it partially theirs? Newfoundking
Here's the general rules on how this stuff works. If you convert a model of another format to the proper v3o, then you need to obtain permission from the original author before releasing it. The only time you can release a model without the explicit permission of the author is when they give free use with fair credit usage rights. Basically just credit the one that made it. This is because the people making these models will spend sometimes hours or days creating these things, and to convert it to another format takes a fraction of the time originally used. If you release someone else's work, make sure you're allowed to from them (either explicit permission or general free usage and always credit)
MikeyPI
Models from other games just credit the game in which it came from (if the original author is EA for example credit EA) If the author of the model was an independent modder for a different game you'd require their permission to convert it and release it. jdclark2008
I agree. You need to always credit the people who did the ground work for you. Re-skinning and releasing or importing from another (game) format. Most everyone who is involved in mod making would just like to get a shout out for the work they do. just my 2 cents. itchboy
Thank you for your opinions on this. I wanted to clarify this because the Manhattan Mod uses buildings from GTAIV and I was wondering how they were able to get it in-game. We just heavily credited Rockstar, there's no point in trying to get actual permission from the studios because they don't really get involved in the modding world at all. x
