Emergency scenario (What would you do?)

Recommended Posts

(I am assuming I have 2 pumpers and a hydrant)
Catch a hydrant, send 2men in to do entry and search for victims, have 2 more firefighter outside with a line ready to go in if needed, call PD for traffic control, ask EMS to stage, have 2 teams of 2 attack the fire from the outside.

Im doing the british way: Have two engines go, send a BA team in with hose (search, if no one is found put out a fire). Have other fire fighters use the hose to put it out. Call the police (move on the squatters or control). Call ambulance if anyone is found hurt.

If it's obvious (i.e. car directly outside a shop/supermarket) spend a few minutes looking for the owner. Any more than 5-10, depending on the condition of the child (i.e. f they deteriorate swiftly within 2 that changes things) then *pop* in goes that window. Parents, if found, verbally rebuked, if they're ignorant when found - cautioned and referred to social services.

Ask any bystanders about the situation (who was with the child? how long were they gone? etc) Try the door to see if its unlocked (try before you pry) if the door is locked and the child isn't in immediate danger get the lockout kit from my car and open the door that way, if the child is in immediate danger use a glass punch on the passenger door to gain entry and then remove the child from the vehicle. Call EMS to have them evaluate the child.

I would break the window as soon as I got on scene. North Carolina State law allows you to break  a window if an animal or child is locked in a hot car.  http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/07/19/3038300/house-oks-bill-to-let-officers.html

I'm guessing it's confirmed to not be a hoax?

I would send the local EOD unit, escorted by two armed units (preferably sedans, such as the Trojan units), and multiple IRVs to cordon off a large radius from the shopping center.

Fire wise, I'd dispatch multiple regular engines, a few tankers and chiefs to command the scene. A ladder unit or two if it's a multiple story thing.

I'd send the HART team, with their mobile hospital thing, along with a few regular ambulances, and keep air ambulance on standby.

You are undercover to take down an arms dealer. At the site of the deal and takedown you see 3 people kicking someone on the ground. The arms dealer will show up any minuite.

Well, I still think it's an officer's job to protect and serve. You can't risk calling a patrol car and waiting seeing someone being assaulted like that. It's just not right. I'd go and identify, deal with it appropriately and blow the sting

For you fire guys: Your dispatched for a working fire you pull up on scene and as the officer you give a size up the size up is a single story vacant house with fire showing reports are there might be squatters what do you do?

I dont know about other areas of NJ but a 1st alarm assignment for a reported structure fire is typically 2 engines, 1 ladder, one tender (or tanker), 2 special service unit such as a rescue truck with a cascade and a RIC team (or FAST team, RIT team, etc.) and a rescue squad to set up rehab operations. If i was personally in the officers shoes, i would pass command to the next due arriving unit or officer of higher rank.

1st due engine - Initiate aggressive interior attack

2nd due engine - Hit the hydrant and feed into 1st due engine

1st due truck - take the driveway. Assuming they have a full crew, send the Officer and 2 firefighters inside for primary search and send the rest to the roof for vent

Tender - If no hydrants, start a shuttle, request a third engine to the scene and alert Tender Task Force with the closest fill site

Special Service Units- cascade stages at rehab location for ease of access and to ensure firefighters go to rehab, RIC team stages at command post

Rescue Squad - Send one ambulance crew to stage at the command post with Stretcher, Jump Kit, Suction Unit, AED, ETC. and have a second ambulance crew run Rehab operations away from scene.

Any feedback on this is very much welcome!

Lets totally use a scenario from a while back ignoring the PD one, Firefighters unite lol.

Send two guys in with a inch and a half, have two at the door feeding them line and as the RIT.

Call for 2 more departments for mutual aid. And 2 medic units, one for rehab, one for patient treatment/transport

If the people are available send in a second hose line with with 2 more firefighters and have 2 more pull another line for exterior exposure protection (but with SCBAs on but not on air)

Once MA is on scene and they are assisting with water shuttling, have 2 teams climb up a ground ladder to the second floor (if anything is left) and begin a search up there with SCBAs on air.

Proceed to beat up all 4 guys with the closest convenient blunt object you can find. Yell loud obscenities at their unconscious bodies until the arms dealer shows up. When he inevitably asks "Holy s*** what the f*** just happened?", calmly reply "Walked past these fools and one of them sneezed, can you believe that s***?"

Establish reputation as stone-cold lunatic badass. Climb up ranks of criminal organization to become boss' right hand man. Wait for big deal with mob/triads/cartel to go down. Rip off prosthetic nose, pull out badge, yell "Police, everybody freeze!" while dozens of SWAT guys pour in from the doors and rappel down from the roof and a chopper swoops in and shines its spotlight. Take part in ensuing large-scale firefight. Fire your pistol without reloading. Boss comes out of hiding holding your girl hostage. Take precise shot at boss' head, sending him tumbling down in a vat of molten steel/barrel of acid/shark tank. Deliver cheesy yet badass line. Kiss the girl. Asshole captain pats you on the back and congratulates you. Reply with cynical remark. Walk out with girl under your arm. 80s rock-and-sax tune. Roll credits.

Here our fire assignment would be 3 engines, 1 aerial, 1 rescue, and 1 ALS ambulance. I'd request a 2nd ambulance off the bat due to possible entrapment.

So:

1st engine will be an  1 3/4" 300' lay to the seat of the fire depending on exact conditions

2nd engine grabs the plug, crew will proceed in for primary stretching a 2nd 1 3/4 line of engine 1.

3rd engine will be RIT

Aerial will stage on the hard surface and do vent, preferably vertical depending on nature of the fire

Rescue will perform secondary

1 ALS unit will have Rehab section

2nd unit will remain on scene available pending any potential injuries or victims

We have 3 stations, the furthest from the scene will send a unit for rit. so...

*tones* "stations 2, 1, and 9(code for rit), a structure fire"

Station 2 has two engines and a heavy rescue. First engine lays in as search team, second engine will grab hoses off the first for interior attack. Rescue guys likely stand by as initial rit during search operations. They will rotate in to attack or work exterior.

Station 1 arrives with 2 engines as well. They will rotate into suppression spots as needed. Their ladder will begin roof ops.

Station 3 has two engines, a brush unit, and a department-built insulation vacuum. As station 9, they send their rit apparatus only. The other units will stand by to cover other calls.

Depending on fire conditions, we may call an engine or truck from a neighboring department to the scene. If the bulk of the fire is not controlled within 20 minutes, we have neighboring units man our two empty stations with an engine. One neighbor sends their rescue pumper as our three rescue pumpers and the rescue are tied up at scene. A structure call given as a 2, 1, 9 is the only time all 4 of our extrication equipped units are on the same call.
