Semitransparent parts on vehicles

Recommended Posts

Guest dionissimus

Could someone please save me some time and point me to an article, or at least a sample model so that I can figure out how to make those?

I am not sure there is any info like this posted, if there is none, could you just post an advice? A very general one, like "Instead of texturing the element change the material characteristics like so..." or "There is a special value for semitransparency in the alpha" (yes, I know alpha generally controls reflectivity in this engine). Something like that.

Thanks in advance : )

Hi,

This might hep you:

- Black = Normal, no reflection, no transparency

- White = Reflection

- Grey = Transparency

If I am wrong, someone correct me

Thank you, I'll try it when I get the time. Will post the results. Does gray mean 128,128,128 or...? For some reason I thought shades of gray means different levels of reflectivity... never checked it though.

With Photoshop, the opacity gets converted automatically when you select the DXT1 mode while exporting to DDS. Pretty useful because it is 100% done correctly. If you want I can provide you with the right .DDS file for you. :)

This is something entirely unexpected... Yes please! If you can, kindly provide me with a dds texture that demonstrates all the possibilities of alpha channel in E4 engine. Namely, the non-reflective part, the mildly reflective part, the fully reflective part, semitransparent part and totally transparent part. I will post the sample texture in a few moments, please edit it in photoshop (the alpha channel, of course), and post back. This will be of GREAT help to me, and I WILL post a breakdown on the functions of the alpha channel in E4 engine, after I study the post and repeat experiments on my textures.

If you can help me with this, I'll write a short concise tutorial on transparencies and reflections in E4. (Well, if the rules don't change this autumn, that is, with the new version being published : )

The attached archive contains a simple photoshop texture.
